It was worth it reading almost 600 pages of TOGAI to get to this. And it's not even a romance.

While reading this I had to stop and re-read “A taste of iron and gold” (still excellent, I still love it). Then I immediately picked this back up and continued reading. It was so utterly perfect, is such a lovely background of Tadek and a continuation/epilogue of ATOIAG all in one, and had such a perfect ending. I absolutely sobbed reading the last few chapters, the good crying when it’s something lovely but so sad but still so heartwarming. I really love Evemer, Kadou, and Tadek—I hope we get more of them in the future (including the big event alluded to in this book). It was lovely and wonderful and I absolutely recommend reading it.

It's been a year since I read A Taste of Gold and Iron and I was worried that I wouldn't remember who was who when I started this because it's been so long but from page one, Rowland's writing pulled me immediately back in and a complete tidal wave of emotion hit me as I kept reading. This was so beautiful and I'm still sobbing as I write this. I genuinely love this world and these characters and my heart belongs to little baby Tadek who always tried his best.

Basically a long epilogue to book 1 and a missed opportunity to flesh out/balance out Tadek's history with something besides hurt and vulnerability.
I'm all for a good royal/court romance and don't require leftist polemics--the first book shows why the power relations between a ruling family and its armed guard are well worth exploring--but this book tips over into worship of hereditary royals and military obedience. It's only military superiors who show care and tenderness for young, poor Tadek (the adults living in poverty are, in contrast, cruel and/or neglectful).
