This started off so strong but when we got half way, Gracie became so whiny and annoying.

Her constantly questioning whether Sam wanted her when he constantly reassured her was crazy.

And her moral high ground was annoying me, her feeling bad and wanting to cancel the contract for pretending to be Fangli when literally no one was getting hurt and her getting a large sum of money is insane to me. Like girl you just lost your job and you need the money to get your mom into the good nursing home, put your morals to side for greater good šŸ™„ Also her running away because she thought she heard something instead of getting clarity made me so angry. I can’t stand miscommunication when it can literally be cleared up in 2 seconds if they actually talked.

Now I loved the build up to Sam & Gracie’s relationship, they were so cute and I’m glad they managed to work it out at the end. They honestly had such great chemistry and banter!

Also I loved the plot line so much, we have quite a few movies with doppelgƤngers switching places but not enough books so I really enjoyed that aspect.

The plot twist at the end genuinely surprised me, didn’t see that coming!

3.5 āļø Cute and an easy binge. I wish that Gracie was a little more likable (the last hour of listening time really made me want to pull my hair out in frustration) and that her relationship with Sam was slightly more developed. That being said, I recommended it to some friends so that hopefully I have someone to talk to about it.

Really enjoyed this book. Love the characters and the plot development. Ending was perfect.

The Stand-In is a classic character building story with plenty of teasing moment of romance, self-doubt, and finding yourself in a better place than you started. The book takes place in the 2-3 months that Gracie finds herself posing as Fangli, learning her entire life, mannerisms, and relationships along the way. Not to mention Sam. My favorite parts were when Sam wasn't Sam Yao, as Gracie puts it, he's just Sam. I loved how she ended up focusing more on herself during the entire venture, but also helping Fangli learn about her own mental health, and breaking Sam out of the superstar shell he's found himself in.
If you aren't picky about predicable endings, or just love a read that has a multitude of different layers to the story, I highly recommend this book. It didn't WOW me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the read either way and loved to see Gracie find more of herself, albeit imperfect, in the end. Perfect characters at the endings of stories are so boring anyway.
Don't be scared away by the romance tag, it's a lot more than just that.

The author said something like she wanted to create a story that functioned like a spa day, meaning relaxing and leaving the reader feeling good afterwards. She definitely succeeded!
