What the hell was that?
I was 63% in when I gave up. Sure, I'd love to know what's so special about Skylar, but I've cringed one too many times when I got to these lines:
Skylar giggled.
"What's so funny?"
"Do you always start your sentences with the word 'so'?"
Mason chuckled lightly. "Yes, I do."

Apparently, this is supposed to show Mason's "humorous side", but it made me cringe so hard. Not only did the story just jump from a rather dark mood to laughter and tickling in two seconds, but I could also feel the author giggling to herself while writing this and thinking, "Whoops, I used the word "so" twice. Better make a joke out of this instead of rephrasing it." Not to mention that I can't imagine a man like Mason chuckling about it, or someone as dim-witted as Skylar noticing such details.
Speaking of which, that character is so incredibly whiny! And when she's not crying, she's picturing Mason naked. In that same scene I just mentioned, she thinks, "I wouldn't mind seeing you shirtless." How thoughtful.
Another dull character was her cousin Kayla. Is she really blind enough not to see what's up with Mason & Co., even when they are stepping into a different dimension? And even Skylar was taking it with relative ease, considering everything makes her bawl.
Anyway, I can't say much about the storyline since I didn't get to the end, but if you value good writing, consider grabbing another book...

I'm a little bit not so keen on this. Its a decent book but it just seems a bit YA for me.

Hmmm. I liked it, but it wasn't what I expected. I will continue to read the series.

I really enjoyed From Gods. Mary spun a new and interesting twist to the Greek gods and created a great story. My only complaint was the writing itself. It was repetitive and the feel of it was that of someone who hasn't quite honed their writing to the best it could be. But the story, plot, and characters definite kept me interested and I can't wait to
Read the sequel.

Is it just me or are the Gods descendants slightly arrogant? :)

Really good.

This story was really well written and knew how to draw you in. Being that I'm into PNR this was right up my alley! Would recommend.

I loved From Gods so much, I spent every waking moment I had (while I wasn’t working of course.) devouring this book!

Why I loved it:

The story is both original and reminds me of Twilight at the same time.

Romance & love is the central element here, what I LOVED was that it felt real. Their feelings for each other slowly built up in a realistic way throughout the book. Lots of swoon worthy moments that had me smiling!

"He interweaved his fingers through hers, guiding her to his car, and for the third time, he held her hand as if it had always belonged there."

The Feels! The main character Skylar has been through so much. You can feel her emotion pour from the pages...

“They say time heals all wounds. It doesn’t. It just patches a broken heart. It doesn’t get any easier over time. You just learn to live with the pain.”

The genre- It falls somewhere in between young-adult and new-adult, with the sub genre being fantasy, romance and mythology! (It’s all clean.)
Skylar is at the pivotal age where she’s just getting ready to start college and enter adulthood,we get to see her character develop in many different ways throughout the story.

The Mythology- I loved the original take on Greek Mythology in this one, I’ve never read another mythology book quite like this one!

The Mystery- As it states in the summary, Skylar’s life pretty much turns into one big giant mystery. Don’t worry, she finds out quite a bit but there’s new questions to be answered for book two!

"Being curious idiots, we decided to risk our lives to find the answer."

The Characters- Not only did I love Skylar and Mason but the secondary characters as well! In fact, they were written so well and are set up in a way where I could see some of them having their own books later on!

The Ending- Even though this is a series I love the way Mary Ting wrapped everything up oh so nicely...until the last page that is! There’s nothing like that last second twist to make you want to read the next book right away!

All that being said, I’m kicking myself for not reading this book sooner! (It came out in 2013.)

I will be starting book two From Deities tonight! I am so excited, it has an 4.23 rating on Goodreads! Mary Ting is now an auto buy author for me!

Extra book #27 ... not for the EBN Challenge.

Cute quick read. Nice beginning to the series.

I found this series on sale and the blurb instantly hooked me as a potential win. It promises OG paranormal/mythology YA vibes. Did it live up to my hopes? No. Nope. Not at all. Let’s find out why.

Maybe try if you like: younger YA, Greek Mythology but make it today, teen tropes.

I started reading this with a nostalgic hope that would satisfy my inner angsty teen, and all it did was irritate her. Like, a lot.

The characters were not good. The leading lady, Skylar, reads as incredibly young and naïve as she sets off to join her cousin for an epic summer before she starts college and adult life. Enter ‘the guy.’ He’s obviously hot and obviously not mortal and he’s also unaware that his bag of tricks doesn’t work on Skylar until they just happen to meet again. Ugh, whatever!

The cousin and aunt are side characters. Period. I remember nothing about them.

The writing just didn’t work for me either. It seemed very young and basic. I found that the “details” were just over explaining things again and again. I read passages out loud to friends to make sure it wasn’t just me. It wasn’t. Did you know that skin has to adjust to temperatures gradually? Or that regular humans can’t breathe underwater? Yes? Well, you get told anyway.
I have read that it picks up as it goes but when I reached the dude’s POV in chapter 6 and my hope that it would get better wasn’t realized – I gave up. I wasn’t getting any payoff for the hard work of trudging through the pages. And that’s saying a lot because I have slogged through some terrible world-building to get to the plot countless times. I just couldn’t.

So maybe give it a try if you don’t care about any of the things I just mentioned because apparently people liked it back in 2013…
