Some summers you'll change shape and in the following years, relatives who used to fuck you up will say, "oh he got so big now" and reach up to try to pat you on the head and you slap their fucking hands down and stare in awe at their confusion.

It is a ROUGH read, but it’s a unique style.

Super tough read, content-wise. I think it was a striking and unique choice to write a memoir in third person, but it also seems like it would probably be easier to write about some of these things like they happened to someone else

I'm still new at writing reviews/ratings. Being that this is a memoir - I am inclined to give all 5 stars - who am I to judge someone's story. I listened to this book and think that added to the experience greatly since the author did the narration.
Parts of the story made me wince, including when I could feel my own racism rising up.
There were so many relatable moments in this story and that helped me see how much racism divides us and our childhood experiences. I'm grateful to have read Joseph's story.

A raw and glittering memoir of growing up in the 2000's. I could relate to a lot of the lived experiences Thomas shared, specifically toxic masculinity, bullying, and unstable family home life. I just wanted to hug him by the time I was done.

This definitely an adult and black version of A House on Mango Street. Very important read about how black children especially black boys are do often striped of their childhoods: truly the embodiment of we can't have nice things. Pretty brutal read but in the best way.
