I can't even begin to express how much I absolutely LOVED this book!!!
An incredible view into the life of one of the most talented musicians of our time. Dave's humility and warmth is felt throughout the book. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Dave Grohl himself. Highly recommended reading the book this way for the best experience!

difficult to rate this one. wonderful stories and tales of silliness and joy, i loved hearing more bits and pieces of a life that has been so well-broadcasted. tricky to separate the Dave i read about here and the Dave we’re all currently reading about in the media. this was also written before the death of Taylor Hawkins, another tragic layer in Dave’s funeral cake of losses. i’m giving it five stars because four felt incorrect but five doesn’t feel concrete, and honestly who am i to rate the life story of another
This was an enjoyable read from one of Rock N Roll's coolest dudes. Dave Grohl always seems like such a nice guy who just loves to play music. After reading this memoir, I can say with absolute clarity that all my assumptions were true. He really is just a nice dude who loves to jam. His stories about playing for Scream, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters was everything you'd expect from a musician who finished high school and jumped immediately on a tour bus. Is this stunningly well-written? No. It's just fine. The sentence structure is repetitive but not boring. He literally writes exactly the way you'd expect. I liked the structure of the book. It was semi-chronological, meaning that he started with how he got into music, then his time with Scream, then Nirvana, then Foo Fighters. However, within that chronology, he would jump backwards and forwards in time sort of like he was reflecting on those experiences while also telling you about his daughters and the cool things he's done and the cool people he's met. And he has met some cool people. Joan Jett, Little Richie, Elton John, Paul McCartney, etc.
Perhaps the thing I loved most about this memoir was that Grohl still seems so humble. He still seems surprised that he got to meet Joan Jett or Elton John. He still gets shocked when asked to perform at the Oscars or have drinks with Paul McCartney. It's like he doesn't know he's an incredible musician and hero to so many.
I also LOVED his stories about his daughters and the cute AF pictures of him and them at the father-daughter dance. His big grin is so endearing. You can tell he loves them completely (his story about flying for 24 hours from Australia to LA and then back again so he could go to the dance notwithstanding).
As with any celebrity memoir there is plenty we don't get to see or hear, but I get the sense that Dave Grohl is pretty fucking cool fr. And that makes me happy. The same cannot be said for Miriam Margoyles.
