It's not as detailed as zodiac and I understand why you should read the first three of Zodiac to grasp how this world is set up. It seems to move so fast with little detail beyond the main plot.

4+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti do it again!  Whatever magic they wove into Zodiac Academy, has also been added into the start of this series.

Plot: After her brother is found dead following an overdose of the new drug on the market Killblaze, Elise Callisto, refusing to accept this as the true cause of death for Gareth, jumps into an investigation to uncover who is responsible for his death.  After learning the King of the Academy is to blame, Elise enrols herself at the academy he was attending before his death in an attempt to uncover who "The King" could be. Only problem: there are four potential Kings of the Academy and she finds herself drawn to each one in a different way. She has to get close to these kings, keep her focus on the investigation, and avoid being dragged into all sorts of trouble - including getting caught up in the occurring gang wars and having her true identity revealed to one of the many powerful figures at the academy.

The plot sounds simple enough, but it is layered and engaging in the way that everything this duo creates is. The characters are a combination of golden retriever - or perhaps golden lion, morally grey (very very grey), dark and broody, and strong and quiet, yet vulnerable. It ticks every box! Elise is a fantastic MFC.  She herself is super strong and I love her banter with the boys. The character dynamics leave me turning pages waiting for the next interaction and the chemistry is off the chart!

This book does jump back and forth between the present and the past (as told from Gareth's POV). I typically don't love this style of plot line, but its done so well and really gives extra depth to Gareth's character. I feel far more invested in Elise's mission to learn the truth than I would have without this.

Narration review: The first time I read this book was about a year ago, but I didn't continue on at that time.  I decided to listen to the audiobook as a refresher before starting the next book in the series.  10/10 would recommend! The narrators were fantastic.

I loved all the characters and how the authors made them more personable unlike the ZA series. Not sure how these books connect still but I’m excited to see!

3.5

I'm not as invested as I am for Zodiac Academy but I still enjoyed the read! I wish Ellise was more fleshed out as a character but I hope she will be in the next story. On another note, I really don't like Leon, especially towards the end. I just don't like thieves.

I am still not sure about all the love interests either.

These are way more fun than the Darkmore books. They’re more similar to the first few ZA books before they became totally unhinged.

These boys have nothing on the Heirs. If you like books where multiple guys are constantly falling at a girl's feet, obsessing over her, and the only thing they seem to care about is how badly they want to sleep with her—then this book might be for you. But for me? I need personality. I want depth. I came across this guide that shows the best reading order to get the most emotional impact from the Zodiac world, but honestly, I'm really tempted to just go back to Zodiac Academy—unless someone can convince me the other books actually get better.
