“The umbrella was like a flower, a great blue flower that had sprung up on the dry brown hillside"

Rating- 5 stars

The Blue Umbrella is a short story about a girl Binya who manages to trade her leopard claw for a beautiful blue silk umbrella. The umbrella is the prettiest in the village and the whole village envies Binya for having.

This book is set in the hills of Garhwal and being Indian myself, it was very interesting to read about the atmosphere and Indian culture.

At first I had rated this 4 stars, but then I realized there was no reason for me to rate it lower so its a 5 star now!

This is extremely short to write a proper review, but I enjoyed every bit of this book. I’ve always loved Ruskin Bond’s work, and this book was no exception.

There is also a simple message about being kind to others and not being jealous. Would highly recommend the book, especially for Indians.

This was my first Ruskin Bond that I read for fun. I must have come across his pieces before not giving much thought to who he is. This is the first time I read him with the intentions of reading him.

The Blue Umbrella is a short and sweet story. It captures the essence of village life in a beautiful manner. I can picture this setting so easily. I've came across these scenes over and over in my short life and this is the first time I got to read them in a book for fun. The ending was so heartwarming and left a smile on my face.

Looking forward to picking up more books by Ruskin Bond in future.
