April is national poetry month and I saw this book on our display at the bookstore I work at. I knew it was popular because I remember a lot of customers asking for it so I decided to give it a try.
I enjoy how the book is just their thoughts. I’m sure that sounds odd because it’s poetry but sometime with poetry books the book has a theme or is divided into sections but with this one I feel like I’m just floating through their throats and memory just spending time in their mind. It feels very intimate. I just enjoyed getting to know them through their work.

I first discovered Andrea Gibson years ago through Button Poetry on Facebook. Their spoken word performances were mesmerizing. I could never scroll past. Then COVID hit, and Andrea began sharing poetry on Instagram, often accompanied by a squirrel friend who would regularly stop by. During that time, they opened up about their battle with cancer, celebrated being in remission, and later shared the heartbreaking news that the cancer had returned.

Every time I listen to or read Andrea’s words, my heart stutters, and I catch my breath. Their poetry is achingly beautiful, and their reflections on life, love, and grief leave me feeling both hopeful and at peace.
