This story overall was cute. I love the lack of complications there truly can be when it comes to writing a love story, where one relies solely on imagining the best possible scenario with no limits.
I enjoyed the small bits of Pittsburgh we did get, and the overall message of the book, that we miss 100% of the chances we do not take. Pride and Prejudice on its own is a story I quite enjoy, but the pieces taken from it and put into this book did not feel great to read, they had me shaking my head because they really took me out of the story. I much preferred the original romantic moments Lippincott created herself for the characters.
This book could have also used another proofread. There were some glaring issues in the hardcover I bought, for example on Page 42, where the wrong character is being told their carriage has arrived. A moment that was supposed to be taciturn and tense fell flat, because this mistake made me stop reading completely and go back a few pages, just to make sure I was remembering the characters and reading it correctly. I still would like to try other books by this author. I would even enjoy a continuation of this story or a story about the life of Mr. Montgomery.
And lastly, I suppose if you come to Pittsburgh in 2023 from the countryside of England in 1812, it may feel like a much less restrictive place to be a lesbian or bisexual woman in for a time. (Audrey's feelings at the end, coming out to her parents out of necessity, were relatable.) I am also heartened by the fact that Lippincott and her wife live there happily. But I am glad I moved to see what it's like to be more accepted in different places.

3 stars // this was an incredibly whelming read. nothing wrong per se, just a little boring and slow. (i am def a little older than the target audience so that probably contributed.)

I think the only reason this book wasn’t rated higher is because period pieces aren’t my fav genre. I gave it a try because I love the author and I do not regret it. It was cute and sweet with just the right amount of angst. I loved seeing the realization of both characters and how they came to accept themselves. The parents knowing and having gone through similar things both shocked me and made me very happy. Shoutout to Mr. Montgomery fr.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are fleshed out and the setting is described so beautifully. Having the 1800's described to you from a modern perspective is fun.
What I would criticize is that the conversations between the people from those 1800's were starting to become unrealistic as the story went on - the linguistics of today's English were different back then and that wasn't focused on enough, in my opinion.
Everything else was ejoyable and the ending really pulled the story together.
