This book was absolutely brilliant. I think I can definitely say that I have never ever read a book like this before. The story telling comes across as quite poetic, which makes up for the lack of dialogue (the main character is mute so...not much talking). Also, even though the main character doesn't speak, I still ended up absolutely loving his character through his mannerisms and a lot of the heroic actions he took throughout the book. There were some rather humerous parts as well, many contributed by the baby and the goat. Overall I really, really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings!!
You know when you read a book, and you can tell objectively that it's really well written, but it's just not doing anything for you? The Vagrant started off like that for me. It's written in the present tense, which is something I find difficult to read anyway, and then the main character doesn't speak. At all. I really struggled with it for about the first half of the book and I was considering giving up on it. Fortunately, something clicked at that point and I found the second half much easier to read. By the end of the book I properly cared about the characters, and I want to know what happens next. I'm glad I persevered, although reading it as a bedtime book has resulted in some very strange dreams and broken sleep this week!
There is something about this book that demanded I not put it down for the past 24 hours and read voraciously until the last page. I hesitate to compare any author with another--but the Vagrant calls to mind my other favorite series of books, The Dark Tower. This strange mix of fantasy, science-fiction, post apocalypse, hopeful-horror mix turns into something all on it's own. I wonder at how the author managed to suck me in, and keep me, with a main character without a voice--pretty sure it was through the sorcery of pure writing talent.
I've waited a long time to be able to afford this book and to read it. I am so happy to have gotten the chance to read it, and inevitably sad that it's over. I hope to be able to read more, soon.
