3.5* rounded up.

I really enjoyed this, will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
adventurous emotional medium-paced

I read this to get out of a reading slump I had found myself in. I am sure happy that I did. How BAD ASS is this sword fighting mute, you might wonder?? Well, let me be the first to tell you - pretty bad ass. Not only that, but he has a baby and a goat. That goat was the saving grace of many pages, oh the humor. I laughed, I felt, and I am refreshed in the reading world again. What a pleasant surprise for a simple enough adventure, yet dark, fantasy that kept me turning pages to see what would happen. Looking forward to the next adventure that continues with Vesper on her own.....

This was a weird read which is exactly what I want from my fantasy. The writing style is sparse and I found that I often felt that I wanted more detail about the world. Tbh, this was frustrating and took away from my enjoyment of the novel. The setting was really great. It's a weird mix of dilapidated advanced technology, demons, knights, and magic. It was strange enough to hold my interest definitely. The protagonists didn't impact me much to start off with but the titular character, the Vagrant, although he does not speak really grew on me as the novel progressed as did the character, Harm. The ending was somewhat satisfying for the characters but also had me saying "huh?' at parts. Thre "huh?" reaction throughout the book kept me guessing, kept me trying to piece together the puzzle. A second reading of the novel would help my comprehension so I may pick this up in audiobook form from my library sometime.

I think this book didn’t quite land do to the dialogue. I struggled with the lack of a voice from the main protagonist. It made it difficult to feel invested in the story.

New review - now that I have finished this book I have increased my stars to 4 - its a good book -it never did tell you what the story was - but it was well written and if you dont mind a stream of consciousness apocalyptic journey toward "something"... the you'll really enjoy this.
Good reader - good story... just really hard to grasp its purpose - even into the very end. (there Did seem to be an thread there for a minute... but it was not like the definition of a plot... again - just another thing that happened while you were living this guy's life with him...
worth the read - good story...

I am well beyond half way in this book - and I still cannot find a story. No plot - no direction.. not reason - no dilemma...
The writer has a fantastic way of description - and has written a 10 hour book - of descriptions.
Very good - but ... without a story - this is dragging... its like watching a random series of video clips - action clips - nature clips - kids playing in the park... and nothing to hold them all together except that they are in the run-time.
trying to finish it - to say I did.. but cannot recommend it...

I'd give this 4.5 stars if only Goodreads would allow a little more detail in ratings.

A wonderfully written tale about a goat, its endless quest for tasty morsels and the various trials other beings subject it to.

I really loved the goat.
