Holy. Cow.

This book shifted my perspective on the man Jesus was and helped me understand the gospels in a way that I couldn't before.

Primarily, there was a new light shed on just how radical some of his statements were. It wasn't until Philip Yancey compared Jesus' claim that he would tear down the temple and raise it in three days to a terrorist running through the streets of New York claiming that he would tear down the world trade center and rebuild it in three days...it really started sinking in--these things I've heard and read and assumed were normal are actually quite insane!

By the way, that statement was published in 1995--long before September 11th.

I have danced around this book for years. I would pick it up and start the first few pages and then put it down. The beginning didn’t really grip me very much. I got to seminary and thought that I was above popular level works such as this. Then I got into ministry and realized the arrogance of my former opinion. Besides that, it wasn’t really fair to Yancey.

He writes clearly and in an easy manner, but his writing is anything fluff. He engages with scholars from across history and the denominational spectrum. Besides that, he doesn’t just look at the “what?” or “who?” of Jesus. He takes it to the “so what?“ level. This book is peppered with quotes, illustrations, and examples from Yancey’s own life and ministry, scholarly works, novels, poems, and movies. But in all this he writes with a grace and humility that is often unseen.

One of the best Christian books I've read in a long time. Learned a lot about the culture of Jesus' time, the religious caste system of his time, and the political situation of his time. Very illuminating and a recommended read to all believers.

Great book to make you think twice about the Jesus you believe in. Is it the Jesus of the Bible or the Jesus made I'm society's image.

I will just say now that I will read ANYTHING this guy ever writes. Awesome.

Loved certain chapters, others I found too moralizing.

As I read this book, the author brought up “current events.” I had to look at the copyright to see how current the book was. 1995. That explained a lot. I would love to know his thoughts based on events going on now in 2022. With that said, I liked viewing Jesus in different ways. Yancey made points I hadn’t thought of before, and I always like seeing different perspectives.

It couldn't have been better, so seamlessly put together, so much truth, so much life-changing truth, I have never read a book that's changed my thinking so completely, Yancey is the C.S Lewis of this generation.

This is an excellent supplement to graduate school Christology which, I think should be read by those who take the discipline seriously.
