Overall, I was very disappointed with this book. I was intrigued by the cover, since it looks like Howl's kitchen. It seemed to be a very generic underdog becomes the hero story, but with a bunch of humorous scenes smashed in.

Then there was a thread of romance that was way to much of a slow burn for me. I won't be continuing the series to the next book. Which, by the way, is called The House Witch 2??!! Why not call it something different?

I was struggling for days on end to read one or two chapters and have since not picked it up for three whole weeks, I think I have to just accept the loss.

DNF at 79%.
I've loved and enjoyed a few "cosy fantasies" now, so I was hoping for similar things here of a witch in a fantasy caslte just making some nice food with a sprinkle of romance thrown in.

Instead, this kind of left me feeling like I was watching a long-running anime full of filler. Yes, there can be things happening, and a few isolated funny/interesting moments might occur, but nothing significant can take place that changes the characters or setting enough to disrupt the continuity of the "real plot" when the filler ends. Even the plot that was in here with the different kingdoms and spies/assassains or whatever felt like filler.

There are far too many characters that seemed to disappear and reappear at random, or just kind of stand around doing nothing. And plot threads that in another story would be very serious seemed to have no urgency to them.
It was building to some sort of climax with the main romance at the point I gave up, but I was so bored by it that I no longer care to know what happens.

The House Witch is an adorable fantasy romance that tackles big issues in a light-hearted and whimsical way. I adored Fin and his friends and really didn't want to put this book down. I'll definitely be reading more of the series at some point.

truly wanted to love the house witch bc i was trying to fill the void left by emily wilde, but this was genuinely unreadable. i got maybe 15% of the way through? but oh my god, the dialogue and honestly just the writing in general was SO bad. this needed about three more rounds of serious editing before it was published (and yes i know it was self published initially but i KNOW it’s been through edits since then based on other reviews!)
but yeah overall this was a huge disappointment lol and my emily wilde void remains unfulfilled
