I had a fun time reading this and the romantic subplot was cute but I don’t think this will stick with me. I wish the plot was wrapped up better at the end, one or two more chapters would’ve been useful. There’s no real conclusion to the prince’s story except for the authors note. While I understand wanting to maintain some historical accuracy and the real ending the prince got isn’t exactly easy to write about, It’s still a bummer.

I read the authors most recent work : A Crane Among Wolves before reading this one and the stories are both pretty similar.
This author really loves breaking the main characters apart and making the MLs disappear at the end. Once is frustrating enough please stop it 😭

It was good. But the begining was slowm it picked pace after like 70 pages. I liked FMC's characters. Mystery was inteiguing but predictable . But as I do not expect HUGE plot twists from mystery novels so that was okay.

My main issue was that at the end, the writer wrapped prince's plotline witout giving anything as to what happened to him. Like... We know what happened to him irl, from authors note, but i wanted a proper conclusion in story too. Apart from that, Madam Mun had a motive hence she was a suspect but in my opinion, it was kind of childish and not strong enough (like she was jealous of prince and wanted the King for himself. But... I think it would have made more sense if she had a son or anything and wanted throne for him. Or wanted to have a son.) but since this book is based on real life events, maybe thats why writer didnt want to introduce smth like this. Anyways, overall i liked this book. Much better than silence of bones and other mystery books i have read

This was an easy 5⭐️ read

I’ve always been the biggest fan of historical k-dramas so this was such a pleasure to read. The suspense was I N S A N E!! I couldn’t put this book down until I had all the answers and the buildup was amazing, the storytelling was amazing, and the writing was beautiful. I’m happy with how the story ended. I’m so glad Eojin & Hyeon got their happy ending, especially Hyeon because she has been through enough honestly

I enjoyed the larger theme of this book, which seems perfectly wrapped in this quote:

She held my gaze steadily. “If what is right, honorable, and just will cost you your father’s approval, will you still choose that path? Sometimes - oftentimes - we cannot do both what is right and also please those around us.”
“What if I can do what is right, honorable, and just,” I said, “and Father would never find out?”
“Count the code. Do not charge into the future unaware…No matter how hard you try to preserve yourself, every important decision in life will come with a price. It will come with regrets.”

Entertaining read and fascinating historical context. Just wish the author had developed details around the characters and historical backdrop further.
