omg, what did i just read? this was so good! so much happened and i wasn’t expecting half of it? i loved how everything was captivating, and i was so invested in this whole murder and all the mysteries surrounding it, i have found myself taking soooo many notes along the way. it was really just me writing down all my thoughts and questions about the characters, places, potential clues and really anything i thought was interesting. it truly felt like I was roaming through the palace and all the other places myself looking for an answer to this whole case. ♡

Hur’s “The Red Palace” tells the story of Hyeon, the palace nurse, and her attempts to discover truth amongst political intrigue, murder, and family wounds. It is also a romance, one between her and Eojin, the young investigator.
The story hits many of the beats seemingly standard to Hur’s storytelling and it was a fun read, a heartwarming love story and an informative read on Korean history and the tale of Prince Sado. It didn’t exceptionally wow me but I enjoyed reading it nevertheless. I found the drama less intense than that of Hur’s later work, Crane Among Wolves.
I still think Hyeon is an interesting and relatable character (her relationship with her father, her bastard status, etc are interesting aspects that are not explored in the two works by Hur I’ve read before) and there was overall more room for the story to grow and be than what is explored, imo.
