4/5⭐

The Red Palace was an interesting and fast paced read with mystery and family relations and romance. I enjoyed the characters and the unease that followed us through the story, especially because there was so much in the grey area rather than there being blatant good or bad. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

One thing that made me really happy is that we had a substantial amount of an ending after everything went down. I rarely feel satisfied after reading the ending of a story but with The Red Palace, I was.

However, although I know this is a young adult book, a lot of the time we were told that Hyeon-ah thought or felt a certain way. For example, with her father, she kept saying how she wanted his attention and praise etc to us readers, but I thought it would have been better to show this so we could read between the lines more and wonder why she acts a certain way without the reason being handed to us on a plate. We can gouge it from her interactions with other characters rather than her inner monologue telling us outright. And it wasn't just for this situation but for most of her relationships with the other characters.

The book centers around several murders, and the mystery and surrounding political intrigue is well-crafted, if not as fleshed out as I’d like it to be (particularly with regard to the Crown Prince). I loved the hint of romance and the love interest was swoon-worthy and helpful without stifling our main character’s agency.

the interactions between hyeon and eojin have my whole heart. this book is the perfect blend between mystery and romance and is so atmospheric. i loved reading it for a second time and catching on to details i had initially missed. i could’ve read 500 more pages about these two and their adventures.
