When I first picked up this book and saw that it was on the topic of endangered species but from 25 years ago, I thought "what am I going to learn from this?" In the world of environmental science, that's practically ancient because things change so rapidly. However, I shouldn't have doubted Adams. This book is witty and entertaining, just like all of his books, and it's even better because his voice really shines through. The book consists of Adams and companions travelling throughout the world to see rare and nearly extinct animals. Part travelogue, part educational, I couldn't wait to read more of this book every day. I also checked the status of many of the animals in the book, and was sad to see that so many had declined even further. The baiji hasn't been cited in a long time. The white rino is extinct in the wild. While the echo parakeet is a bit of a good news story, most of the other animals featured in the book are still barely hanging on.

This is an entertaining book on a harrowing topic. Adams' brand of humour suits the topic perfectly, and if you love his other work, I think you'll like this.

I selected this for the 2018 BookRiot Read Harder Challenge prompt "a book about nature." Part travelogue, part scientific warning, this collaborative work takes readers around the globe learning about extremely rare and endangered species and the efforts being taken to save them. Despite the gravity of this premise, this book had me laughing out loud more throughout. I loved learning about several species, such as the Kakapo of New Zealand, that I knew little about and the work being done around the world to help protect those populations. The epilogue was terrific, as it provided an update on what happened after the trips ended. Although it was published almost 30 years ago, it is just as relevant today as when it first came out, perhaps even more so.

I love Douglas Adams and his style of writing. Just the right amount of description, explanation, and story. I enjoyed learning about the animals they visited as well as what humans were doing to help with conservation efforts. There were some slow spots in the book - mainly those involving travel or waiting around (which are generally boring in real time) - but I genuinely enjoyed reading it. The really sad part about this is knowing that half of the animals discussed in this book are now extinct or extinct in the wild in the almost 20 years since being published. Humans suck.
