Oh man. I was really looking forward to this book. I will say I was close to DNFing this book until about 80% of the way through, the last 20% of the book was slightly redeeming. I am giving it a 3 stars because of this. No plot, no character development for Kai or Paedyn and absolutely no world building.

I really wished this book had more going on. Will continue series for Kitt’s villain arc alone.

I cannot stress this part enough: “then he takes that thumb and guides it towards my cheek to wipe away a tear there. Then he pulls it back to his lips, kissing it again before using it to swipe away another tear.” (This is very weird if you don’t get the context)

I was soo excited to read this series because of all the hype, and I have no words, i absolutely love it. It totally deserves all the praise it gets.

First off, I love the author’s writing. It kind of reminds me of hunger games and TOG (especially the sewers part), but it’s still amazing in its own way. I don’t even know how to explain it, but her writing is just so captivating, the emotions, the way she phrases things, everything.

I love pretty much everything about these books, but one thing I keep thinking about is how I wish Kai had actually fought for Pae instead of just handing her over to Kitt at the end. I get why he had to, but stilllll he knew he loved her from the start, so why wait until the last second to tell her to run?

I seriously can’t wait for the last book, this series might be my new favorite.

Did I spend a visit to a relative’s house walking circles around their couches, frantically reading this? Yes. But, did I like it? Weirdly, more than I thought I would, though that wasn’t a high bar. This book was so repetitive, I can recount a total of 3 scenes from it at this point in time, and for those, also, I remember only locations and no true “new” connections, growth, or conversation. The only meaningful one was the last one, which was conveniently fully undone by the plot twist at the end. I have never loved Roberts’ writing and have no real affection or attachment to either Paedyn or Kai, so I was thoroughly underwhelmed, but it was still fast, I’ll give it that. Wholly mid, very second book coded.
