This book does a good job breaking down a complex theory, with helpful and fun illustrations.  It genuinely changed the way I thought about sexuality, gender, other binaries, and society and culture as a whole.

I can't give more than two stars to this one, mostly because I feel like I didn't really get what I thought was promised by the title.

This is just a heavily illustrated book and not actually a graphic novel so the title is misleading.

It's also not about queer history like you might assume by the title. It's a (bit too consice) introduction to queer theory.

Hyvä tiivistelmä queer-tutkimuksen historiasta. Aika tiivis paketti, mutta kuvituksen takia kuitenkin helppolukuinen.

This was different to what I was expecting. It is an introduction to queer theory in academia/philosophy, it reads very much like a textbook. I learnt lots, although there was a lot to take in. It really makes me think and want to learn more.

I wasn't 100% sure on the books emphasis on:
Queer = what you do rather than who you are
For a book that talks a lot about binaries being bad - it felt like quite a strong binary! In reality it can feel like a mix of a lot more things. It also felt like it was maybe minimising to people who have a strong connection with their identities/labels. I enjoyed the emphasis on fluidity however.

It was poor that the drawings of black people were racially ambigious considering the criticisms of whitewashing and lack of discussion of race in queer theory.

In summary, I'm really glad I read this and I'm enjoying thinking about this subject!

i loved the illustrations but found most of the information difficult to wrap my head around...

Oh, gosh... it has been so long since I learned about these theories and discussed them. Absolutely a worthwhile book if you are interested in a relatively inclusive discussion of queer theory for a beginner! It’s definitely more of a gateway into the discussions than the actual in-depth discussions because it seems more like a prerequisite text before you jump in further into queer theory and related theories. I will say that they don’t always phrase things exactly as they mean it though, so it’s easy to misread their intent sometimes.

Don’t forget to queer and trouble the world around you!

Very interesting introduction to queer theory/ related academic pursuits. Felt like sometimes didn’t give enough context/ depth on certain topics— even though I know it’s more of an overview, I feel like some topics require more context than they were given.

This was more of a text book than I realised when I picked it up, but it serves as a good introduction to queer theory. I would have found it really useful at uni I think, and it gave me lots of jumping off points for further reading.
