The weakest book in the series so far. These books previously were about Mia coming to terms with being a princess. It seems like she's pretty much done that now and this book was much more about regular teenage drama than anything else.
Also, Mia's grandmother is a manipulative bitch.

Okay so I did like it. But it is worse than the other three books. The premise was just kind of really boring. Usually there's a dance or a speech as the big moment at the end, but the big moment at the end of this was just a date. And Mia's incredibly insecure, more than usual, which I guess I can understand because she really likes Michael and doesn't want him to break up with her. But also the entire plot of the book is just her having to tell him that she can't go on a date with him. It's a little lame.
So for the TV adaptation idea I had, I would totally not make this an entire season. Actually, I wouldn't make each book a season. I would condense it all into one season, maybe even two seasons for each semester. But I digress. For this book... maybe 2 episodes? Maybe.
I didn't hate it! I absolutely didn't hate it! I just would have approached it differently if I were to make a TV show. For instance, I wouldn't have Mia wait so long until she had to tell Michael she couldn't go on the date. I would have her tell him immediately in G&T after she gets back from the Chanel try on with Grandmere and then have the rest of the episode being her trying to get out of it.
Notable characters I enjoy in this book are Rene, I really like him. I hope we see more of him. I like how snarky and kind of conceited but nice he is. Mia describes him a lot as cynical but I don't know if I got that from him. He's just kind of a rich royal who liked chaos and Mia offers him a lot of chaos. I also always enjoy Lars. I like Michael a lot in this one as well. We get to see more of his personality and I don't know... he was always the perfect boyfriend to me when I was younger and that hasn't really changed. We'll see how it is later. I'm hoping we get a bit more of his personality in future books.
Here's some notable quotes!
"When Michael said he loved me that night during the Non-Denominational Winter Dance, he might have meant love in the platonic sense." Oh Mia babe. You are so unbelievably delusional. Her insecurities really piss me off. I know that they further the plot, but it's so much all the time. I was also very insecure but I mean. I wasn't writing a book about it, you know?
"He had spent his winter break with Tina Hakim Baba's bodyguard, Wahim, snorkeling and hunting wild boar in Belize." I need a whole damn fic on this. This is sooooo gay. This is SO gay. I do in fact now ship Lars and Wahim thank you very, very much. Can you imagine an only one bed trope with these two men? OH god. Unbelievable.
"I didn't even notice that Lars was smirking behind his latte until Lilly told me later." He LIVES for the drama. GOD I love Lars so much. If this were a TV show, he would be an instant favorite. People would make fancams of him, they would make compilations of their favorite Lars moments. Girlypop playlists would be made. I mean there is an untapped market for Lars and I wish it weren't the case.
"I heard an eleventh-grader tried to kill herself because he looked at her. Seriously." This is so high school. One thing Cabot does really well is that she honestly does understand high schoolers. This was so funny.
"Shameeka is really good at science, on account of her being a Pisces." Just another quote that made me laugh.
"Why couldn't Grandmere just have shot me instead?"
"Besides, Lars is keeping lookout at the bottom of the stairs." Give it up for Lars everyone. God I love this man.

Not much really happens in these, and there’s some language that was definitely ‘normal’ for the 2000’s that I wouldn’t my kids reading without some serious conversations but they’re kinda fun. The movies are 100x better, but they had way more character growth & actual plot. Mia & Michael have gotten together but Mia is still an insecure girl who’s never really dated (that other guy did NOT count to me) so she’s always second guessing & unfortunately she’s surrounded by shitty adults who fill her head with crap so she’s never straight forward at all. Can see this being their downfall if it continues, if him going to college doesn’t happen first. Also god I hate her grandmother.
I had to give this one a four instead of a 5 like the others.. Mia was SO whiney.. She was in Europe yet l she could think about was missing Michael.. That part didn't really bug me. BUT once she got home, she started just acting crazy. First, she goes through that phase where she reads Jane Eyre and thinks she should ignore Michael and basically play hard to get. Okay girl, I just read pages after pages of you missing him and now you're NOT going to call him back? Are you kidding me? I'm glad her mom set her straight. Then, after she finds out she will have to cancel their first date because of the ball, she just ASSUMES he is going to break up with her. *sigh* and don't even get me started on the whole is he in LOVE with me or does he just LOVE me bit.. Geez that part drove me nuts.
I guess Mia is only 14 and in love.. She is expected to doubt herself and their relationship (I mean like Mia said they haven't even been out yet) I'm just looking forward to the future books when she matures a bit. I didnt hate the book of course. I still love this series and enjoyed this book, Mia just annoyed me a bit though.

Mia's immaturity really shined through in this one, both with her insecurities about Michael breaking up with her even though they just started dating and with her fixation on parking meters to solve all of Genovia's problems. I thought Cabot did a really good job getting into the mind of a 14 year old navigating these situations and how to Mia these things seemed like the only logical course of action. The whining did grate on me a bit in this one in comparison to the previous books, but hopefully we'll get to see her grow over the next few books.
I think that I actually read this previously and forgot to mark that I had, on Goodreads. This wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the other installments. Part of it could be that I'm reading these as an adult, rather than a teenager, now, so Mia's insecurity, while familiar, starts to feel redundant. I had a lot of fun reading all the very 2000-ish references.
