The 1st part of the book is mia staying ginovia with her father and gradnmere
while gone she struggles with long distance relationships (15 dating a 17 year old)
and then struggles between royal duties and her relationship
The movie came out in 2001 and i assume this was written around then or while in production because the author makes nudge nudge wink wink jokes at a movie/documentary about mias story and the success of it vs what the characters think
this one ends more on a sour note then the other novels and doesnt make for an enjoyable read with all the outdated content and treatment of characters
*a note on the audiobook reader: the first 3 were done by anne hathaway and she seems to have stopped for the others (i believe there is almost 12 books including the middle grade series)
i do enjoy this readers voice as it matched the "young mia" better

OKAY so I understand why people aren’t as huge of a fan of this one because Mia is whiney and waiting to be dumped the entire book. But you have to remember this book is told from the perspective of a fourteen year old girl, talking to her diary, about possibly missing her first date with her *major crush* and that is a BFD. This volume gets four stars because I know for a fact that 14 year old Lydia would’ve written the same stuff in her diary.
Tässä tää teinihöttö alkoi jo vähän kyllästyttää näin aikuisen näkökulmasta :p toisaalta tosi ymmärrettäviä tunteita, ja epävarmuus siitä, pitääkö toinen minusta on varsin yleistä kaikissa ikäpolvissa.
Not gonna lie, this installment was a sharp downward turn for me. Mia was way more annoying in this one. I understand that she’s still very young and at a point in her life where most people have no confidence, but that doesn’t make it any fun to read about. I swear like 90% of the book was just her complaining about being a “talentless freak” and worrying if her own boyfriend likes her as more than a friend. The worry was cute when she didn’t know, but she and Michael are ACTUALLY DATING now, for chrissake.
I’m listening to the audiobooks, and this is the first one with Clea Lewis instead of Anne Hathaway, and while I of course loved AH (she IS Mia, forever and always), I think CL is doing a very good job with it. She actually sounds quite similar to AH. My main point being, I’m pretty sure it’s the writing and not the acting that’s turned me off Mia this book.
I’m still gonna continue with the series, though. I hope Mia’ll gain a little self-confidence in the future and mature a bit.

This book was cute, but the main character was too whiney at times.
This installment of The Princess Diaries series begins while Mia spends her winter break in Genovia attending to all of her princess duties and fighting for parking meters in Genovia (when she'd really rather be back home in NYC spending time with her new boyfriend, Michael). When Mia arrives back home, she is thrilled to go on her very first official date with Michael. However, Grandmere has different plans - she is forcing Mia to attend a ball that night. Mia spends a lot of time worrying about how Michael will react to her having to cancel their date, and she tries desperately to find a way to get out of attending the ball. A subplot revolves around Mia's quest to find her "hidden talent."
When I picked up this audiobook at the library, I was surprised to learn that Anne Hathaway was not the narrator. Instead it was Clea Lewis. Now, at first this threw me off because I had gotten used to hearing Anne's voice, but eventually I got into the story and forgot all about the change. Clea did a great job as Mia (although I still see Anne in my head while listening!).
This book delivers more funny moments as Mia obsesses over completely irrational things - like many 9th graders would do. But at some point, the obsession became a little repetitive, and I just wanted to know how everything would end! I liked this one but didn't love it.

Every time I’m about to be like “omg Mia girly please chill out and stop being so insecure” I have to remember she is ONLY 14 YEARS OLD. And anyone who has an anxious attachment style can probably relate. But I am concerned about the upcoming angst that, iirc, is a result of how Mia behaves bc of that insecurity… but I still enjoyed this. The bit at the end with the Star Wars movie was just so
Okay, before I get into how much I loved this book and people are complaining too much when saying Mia is whiny...
The entire thing where Lars looked menacing because of his dark tan seems entirely racist, and while that is more than likely not the intent, I would recommend that the author amend this. It is not okay to state that. What would make someone seem inherently more menacing because they were darker skinned? I thought about this for a good two hours or so, trying to kill over how it could be something not racist, but I came up with nothing. I know these are the thoughts of Mia, but just something was really off about that.
That aside, I loved the books. I didn't take off any star rating for that, I probably should, but it was a small statement that was never brought up again, and did not contribute to the book in any way, which is why it could be and should be taken out. Anyway, Mia wasn't whiny. She was the same insecure Mia in this book. I think people see it as much of a problem because it was focused around a boy this time than say her height, hair, or lack of breasts. Which is something she complained about in the first three books constantly.
I loooooove this book. It has the same wit and charm as the first three. Michael is the best as usual. If only we could all have a Michael Moscovitz.

2.5 I found MT so whiney in this one and also it was really dated. I only read it because it was a reading challenge category but I do remember really enjoying the others in the series. Maybe I will read the next one, maybe not.
My favorite one of the series so far. I love how things keep getting more interesting for Mia. :D
