Even though we didn't get to follow the Blithe's much, their loveliness and wonder is contagious and all of Lucy's characters are just so delightful and lovable. And I just love a happy ending. And I love getting to follow mostly children's POVs

As a stand alone novel, this is decent — well-written with likable characters. As a novel in the Anne series, this is awful — Anne is hardly in the book and, when she is, Susan and Miss Cornelia do all of the talking anyhow. Gilbert maybe has two lines of dialogue. Even Anne’s kids are barely present, with the spotlight shining mostly on the two Meredith girls, who both just seem like Anne Shirley copycats.

I felt similarly to this one as I did to Anne of Windy Poplars. I know that these kind of old-timey, slice of life books get a bad rap for being boring, bad, or very much of their time. Usually while I can see their point, I usually can enjoy them for how charming or wholesome they can be. But this one really is boring and also just upsetting. It made me really upset to see the Meredith children "acting out" because they didn't know better and then feel bad about it and blame themselves. It wasn't cute or funny like Anne's shenanigans in the first book, it just made me upset. Their Father really made me angry and the fact they needed a stepmother at the end so that they could be parented like... Mr. Meredith stop slacking your kids are so neglected.

Review from 2022

I remember as a child being disappointed that this book was more about the Merediths than about the Blythes--and almost as much about Reverend Meredith as his children. But reading it again as an adult, I think the Merediths are more interesting, even a the romance between a widowed father and a heartbroken old maid!

There is some blatant racism, spoken by certain characters, which automatically takes a star away.

A morning read, and a reread, though it had been a long time. Sweet story of the kids of Avonlea – not focuses as much on the Blythes as on the other children.

And now the charming stories of the next generation begin! Such a full circle experience to watch Anne grow up, then restart the journey with her children and all their friends. The adventures, the woes, the harsh life lessons. You feel it so keenly when you love the characters as much as this. Another grateful moment to my sister for insisting I actually read this series, I’m so glad I have!
