A morning read, and a reread, though it had been a long time. Sweet story of the kids of Avonlea – not focuses as much on the Blythes as on the other children.

And now the charming stories of the next generation begin! Such a full circle experience to watch Anne grow up, then restart the journey with her children and all their friends. The adventures, the woes, the harsh life lessons. You feel it so keenly when you love the characters as much as this. Another grateful moment to my sister for insisting I actually read this series, I’m so glad I have!

Basically zero Anne in this one, but I’m okay with that. The minister’s children captured my heart and the underlying love story reeled me in, along with the foreshadowing of the Great War.
I read recently that LM Montgomery once told a friend she was mostly in the writing business for the money, not just “the beauty of literature” or a hobby to keep her busy. This explains why she wrote SO MANY books in the Anne series...they made money! Honestly though, I feel like she nailed it. She knew her audience, knew what they wanted to read and what would keep them coming back for more....I am 100% a member of the audience she had in mind. I am a fan!

I really enjoyed this one, it's my favourite of the series so far. For me, one of the main aspects that I loved is how the author is subtly challenging the attitudes to children and parenting/discipline of the time period, without being preachy at all. I also think LM Montgomery's dialogue sparkles and there were so many moments that made me chuckle aloud. All the kids are different, and I liked that not all of them fit the day's gender stereotypes either. There is obviously a lot that's problematic when viewed through a modern perspective but you have to set that kind of thing aside given the time period. It's partly that that makes it a really interesting read.
