I mean... it was fine. I found the plot to be a little predictable, but I liked the ending.
Graphic: Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, and Violence
Moderate: Blood
Minor: Cancer

The audiobook for this one was AWFUL. the screenplay reading chapters have this ongoing bit where the narrator will repeat the line..seemingly to imply that it’s a live table reading. Which is fine, I got that, but in the middle of the book somewhere there’s a point where whoever is reading the screenplay repeats each line like at least twice? And it’s just so insufferable to listen to.
The actual movie they made/ didn’t make is confusing and was there actually a part that included a paper fortune teller?
I didn’t finish it :/

The only way I can describe this book is deeply unsettling. It had such an ominous tone throughout and the narrator’s obsessive personality had me dreading what was next. I didn’t see that ending coming either. Definitely a mishmash of several different horror subgenres but it worked.

Elevated horror was a mistake.
I was going to give this 2 Stars, but the ending is stupidly try-hard. This is pretentious, and that's outside of the intentionally pretentious parts. The author is trying going for a "darkness inside us all" thing with all sorts of 9th grade metaphors. I could have been okay with this, but the characters are shallow and unlikable, and the story never spins its wheels until it craps out at the end. Too much gore and "OooOOoo spooky" moments, not enough genuine emotion. At least it's short. Also, it does my "favorite thing:" telling me (the reader) how to feel. "We" don't do anything book/overwritten screenplay. I'm not with you. I'd recommend literally any other book on my horror-about-film shelf.

Okay I’m two for two now on disliking Paul Tremblay books. Two stars instead of one mostly because I am in a terrible reading slump which might have influenced my reading experience with Horror Movie.
I think the main issue here is that there were interesting ideas and themes, but everything else made me bored to tears. I really disliked the way Tremblay wrote pivotal scenes. A mallet to the head would have been more subtle than him trying to make sure the audience gets his point. Can’t really say much else without spoilers.

Underwhelming and frankly, incredibly boring. The slow burn doesn't pay off – the ending was anticlimactic and left me feeling mostly blasé.

This is definitely interesting as an audiobook. It’s made for it with reading from a script as they are making the movie and all of the voices of the “actors”. This is a little out of the ordinary of what I normally read as a “horror” book but I was not really impressed. It wasn’t spooky or scary or even so much a thriller. The main character is definitely a freak and you wonder the whole time where he is going and if he is taking his character in the movie too far, but… yeah…. 2 stars… mostly because the audio was pretty cool because it was like listening to a “movie” coming to life.
