A great book about lifestyles and a good intro and non-judgemental start into plant-based eating.
Full of ridiculous pseudo-science and extreme diet culture nonsense. Going so far as to call those who stick to a highly restrictive diet outlined in the book “Superheroes”.
This review is coming from a vegan, so I agree with her philosophy on animal lives. I just wish she stuck to that topic.

I give this 3 stars for the recipes and the positive writing. Unfortunately I read it concurrently with The Omnivore's Dilemma and this book is just lacking in the journalistic approach to reporting on the industrial food chain. It's more of a "this is bad for you" book with a bit of health information and ecological impact data but not anything substantial. However, if you're looking for a light overview on the importance of eating healthy food in a sustainable way - with good recipes too - this is a great book.
The whole tone of this book is so positive without being preachy - it's very encouraging and gentle.
Alicia definitely displays a great sense of humor without being defensive about her food choices. She gives insight into what's worked for her and has the backing of a highly regarded physician and nutrition expert, Dr. Neil Barnard. (http://www.nealbarnard.org/)
Easy, welcoming, funny, delightful.
And the recipes look delish. Can't wait to try them.

I bought this not so much for the weight loss aspect, but for the vegetarian-vegan-macrobiotic mix. I read the book well over a month ago, and I've yet to try one of the recipes. I'm not very good with the follow-through on that sort of thing.
The book is written in a very conversational tone, and at times, I thought I could be reading something written by her Clueless character, Cher Horowitz. For some, The Kind Diet may be an easier read than Mark Bittman's In Defense of Food, etc. If TKD reaches more people (because of Silverstone's celebrity) and makes them more aware of the dangers of too much sugar, too much meat, etc. in their diet then this book has done its job.

This book rocked my world. It's all stuff I knew before, having grown up Macrobiotic, but I just needed this candid and sweet refresher. And I think most importantly I needed to remember that for me, it's easier to do this diet because I do care about the animals and the planet, and want to help. It's much harder for me to do something for myself alone. So here goes, I'm on day 3 of being vegan...not macro, but I plan on dabbling in that again. I loved this book, because it's something I can WHOLE heartedly get behind.
It was an easy read and very informative. Who know the girl from Clueless could be so knowledgeable and sometimes funny. I actually want to buy the book and try the recipes. Since I went vegetarian/vegan, I haven't been much of a cooker. But I think if I tackle one recipe at a time, I might get the hang of it.
I'll never go vegan. Sorry. With that out of the way, there were a few recipes in here that I found could work for my family. Also, I enjoyed reading the little blurbs about lifestyle changes, GMOs, personal health, etc. I would like to read Silverstone's The Kind Mama next.
I'm not totally enamored with all of the recipes, but the text of the book is pretty good. Reinforced alot of feelings for me.
