If you don't typically read books like this and someone recommends it, reassuring you that you'll like it, just thank them for the rec. and continue with your day. This book will NOT change your mind.

The writing and the characters are so frustratingly juvenile for a "war college" that I just gave up thinking of them as 20+ year olds and imagined them as high school kids instead. It made the dialogue a little more bearable for me this way.

I am clearly not the target demographic for this book, but who is? It's too much for kids (due to the language and out of place and unnecessary "spicy" scenes) and yet the story is told as through the eyes of a hormonal teenager and the world that was crafted is not taken seriously.

I am perfectly okay ending on that cliffhanger and imagining a happily ever after. No need to read the second book for me.

Don’t read if easily offended by books that are of a sexual
Nature. Felt a little “50 Shades” in places and in my opinion completely unnecessary. Could have show same change in relationship without the graphic details.

I wish I could bottle the feeling of reading this book. Is this book perfect? No, definitely not. Then why am I giving it a perfect score? Well this book revived my love for reading. It has been a while since finding a book which makes me want to read it at all times and not let go until I have finished it. The feeling of not being able to concentrate on work or even want to get on my phone because I NEED to know what comes next is indescribable.

The only thing I would change is
the last few chapters revealing Xaden has been in love with Vi since he first saw her. I think this just plays into the “love at first sight” trope, which does not do justice to the story. It would have been so much better to show him slowly fall for her despite their history.

Also Liam’s death devastated me just as much as it did Vi. He was such a good character and the readers were robbed of his development.

Don’t forget to read the bonus chapters, but after finishing the book. There are spoilers!!

I’ve been looking for a good fantasy read with a romantic sub-plot, and unfortunately Fourth Wing didn’t meet the mark. It’s a pity because there’s some really interesting premises and settings; teens split into different factions in order to serve a wider purpose, dragons, some interesting, though juvenile, world-building. It’s very reminiscent of the Divergent series in some ways.

My gripes are plenty. Violet feels incredibly childish that can detract from the storyline. I can understand if this is deliberate with a young FMC, but she’s supposed to be late-teens/early twenties. Similarly, there was a lot of focus on her stature and frailty, which I understand comes from an Ehlers Danlos Syndrome representation, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me in terms of balancing the representational aspect with the whiny, woe-is-me undertones. There was also a lot of “ooo he’s so hot” that oftentimes felt cringe and overused—like I get you feel he’s the most perfect specimen to ever walk, but it falls more into the lustful enemies to lovers. And don’t get me started on the smut; wholly gratuitous and unnecessary, in my opinion.

Overall, while the premise was interesting, I felt that it was poorly executed. I’ll probably try to read the subsequent books as I am intrigued by the fantasy elements over the romance.
