Thoughtful sci-fi with a powerful message about appreciating life and living in the moment. Tinged with darkness but yet funny and joyful too. An enjoyable, easy to read musing on what it is to be human.

The general concept of the story, although not original by any means, is intriguing but the execution was disappointing. There was no apparent logic to which aspects of human life made sense to the protagonist and which didn't even if it was central to the plot. It felt like the author wanted to lead the reader to a great insight about our existence but we just never arrived there. After reading the acknowledgements and learning about the inspiration for the story coming from his own experience with mental illness the lens of the story as well as certain plot points made slightly more sense. Also the female characters seemed to be written in a way to be even more one-dimensional and tropey then the male characters.

After finishing The Midnight Library, I wanted to give Matt Haig another try. I loved the idea of The Midnight Library It was the particular execution that left me wanting something more.

So why not try another book by the same author?

All in all, I'm glad I did. I actually preferred both the premise and the execution of this one. Our protagonist is an alien, sent to Earth to blend in and complete a mission. At first it's just a job, as he arrives, coldly indifferent to what he has to do. But as time goes by, he begins to understand that there just may be more to this human race than meets the eye.

The format is fun, as it's written as his first person account of his time on Earth, for the benefit of his own people. And what started off as as a pretty light read, actually got rather deep as he learned, and shared his views on what being human is all about.

funny in many parts, really cool concept that was executed well

Very enjoyable read. Makes you think about what a strange species we are! The cover on the edition I read was much nicer and included the dog who’s an important character.
