I really liked the first part of this book. I think it to be the strongest opening we've seen from Nicci French. It is intriguing and full of suspense. After that, unfortunately, the story looses quite some of its power. It starts become almost Bridget Jones like, and it is very clear from the moment the second part starts, where this will all eventually end. I think it's a shame, because the book started so well, that it had to end like the way it does.

Ik weet niet zeker wat ik moet vinden van dit boek. Het verhaal is zeker niet slecht, goed bedacht en zit goed in elkaar, maar toch heeft het me niet gegrepen. Ik vond de manier van schrijven erg vervelend, ook al las het erg makkelijk. Abbie's gedachten begonnen mij te irriteren op een gegeven moment, ze komt echt over alsof ze gek is en ik vond het boek daardoor wat te lang. Ik vond het boek spannend en saai tegelijk, erg vreemd. Het wordt ook niet echt duidelijk waardoor Abbie haar geheugen kwijt is geraakt. Ik snap het wel als iemand dit een erg goed boek vind, want dat is het ook wel, alleen iets stond mij tegen.

Nee, nee, nee: 1,5 ster.
Irritante en oppervlakkige personages. Alleen Nadia is redelijk uit te staan, zij is tenminste nog proactief. Het escaleerde bijzonder snel tussen haar en Cameron, zonder goede aanleiding. Niet echt nodig. De politie wordt sowieso afgeschilderd als een stel idioten.
Het verhaal is niet spannend, wordt ook geen spanning opgebouwd. Je weet precies wanneer je belangrijke informatie gaat krijgen. Daarnaast is het een soort real life soap, je draait mee in het leven van de drie vrouwen, maar aan al die informatie heb je geen ster. Vermoeiend wel.
Plot is niet verrassend; een beetje oplettend lezer ziet het zeker aankomen. Half puntje voor de opbouw in drie delen, maakt het boek nog enigszins door te komen.
Hopelijk is dit geen voorbode voor de rest van hun boeken, ik heb er namelijk nog een aantal liggen..

I think I'm a bit over the unreliable narrator (usually a female) plot. I used to read quite a few Nicci French books back in the day, but I just don't think there for me any more. I found the main character, Abbie, quite unlikeable and rather annoying (stop taking taxis and buying wine when you have no money!). This was a book club selection and I powered through it in a few days so it was at least a fairly quick read.

Land of the Living Nicci French
The first chapters of this book had me hooked. I had no idea what was going on and craved to find out how the girl had come to be in this position. However the first chapters were probably the best. Although it was intruiging as each piece unfolded, I found some parts of it completely unrealistic. Her friends and family didn't believe that she'd gone through this ordeal and neither did the authorities! It was a little bit too unrealistic for me, hence the three stars, but was otherwise a good read that makes you keep turning the pages.

Really enjoyed this book. I was hooked on Abbie trying to piece her life back together. I feel it could have had a better baddie though. I dnt want to give anything away but that's the only thing stopping it from being a 5 star for me
