Nic Stone is a fantastic writer and has given us another well-written book about black teen incarceration, police brutality, and systemic racism. Her books are so readable, relatable, and downright necessary. I didn't love this one quite as much as I did Dear Martin, but I still consider both to be beneficial reading. If I could require people to read particular books, both in this series would be on the required reading list.

Such an important book!! I really like how Nic Stone choose to right about a character who isn’t perfect, but still deserves so much. I really liked Quan as a character and how much he grew rather it be in believing he can do so much or just in his relationships. I loved how anxiety, PTSD and therapy were talked about and handled. I also liked learning about how one might find themselves in a gang and why. The only reason it’s a 4.5 is because the first half was a flashbacks and I just kind of wish it just started if that makes sense? Like I didn’t connect as fully to Quan as I could have. Also the other point of view was maybe not necessary but like I honestly didn’t care.

In the sequel/spin-off novel of Dear Martin, Dear Justyce follows Quan through his time in the American prison system under a forced confession.

I loved Dear Martin, but I think I may have loved Dear Justyce even more. Either way, both of these were important stories to tell, and Nic Stone writes both stories in such a beautiful but easily consumable way (I think teens would really benefit from having authors like this, compared to what I was reading 15 years ago). And the authors note at the beginning really solidified the importance of this book in particular.

Everyone should give these two books a read.
