This was good, but I don’t like McFarlane and prefer the books without him.

Maisie Dobbs #8

It is a very strange thing to be immersed in Maisie's London of 1932, watching the rise of the Nazi party both in Germany and in Britain, and knowing what will be happening next. One has the odd feeling of wanting to shout to the characters, "YES!! You are right to be worried, to be concerned. Make those stupid men in the Secret Service listen to you!!"
But they can't hear us, us from the future who know the horrors to come . . .

Perhaps my favorite novel from the series thus far. Maisie finds herself at various bridges in her personal and professional life which leads her to take a teaching position at a college in Cambridge founded by a World War I conscientious objector, all to observe possible Nazi sympathizers on behalf of British intelligence.

I really loved this one in the series! The change in setting to the college and introduction of more characters, developments in relationships…it was all well threaded together.

It's 1932 and Maisie takes on an assignment for British Intelligence as a Philosophy professor in a college in Cambridge. Her job is to identify sympathizers with the Nazi's who may be a threat to Britain. It is a good story with great detecting on Maisie's part, and 2 satisfactory subplots. All in all a good listen for fans of Winspear.
