I felt like the character development that really made the previous book move just completely stalled here. It’s a bit of a filler episode with a side mission for the secret service. So many relationships changed in the previous book that didn’t develop at all in this one. Perhaps it was an intentional move as England around her is moving forward so considerably and the focus the series has had on post-WWI England is moving into pre-WWII England.

I really liked this book. I can feel the tension building even after the book is finished WWII is coming. I am interested to see how the future develops for Miss Maisie Dobbs.
I continue to love this series. Each book teaches some new aspect of the period between the World Wars. The crime/mystery is always interesting and leaves me excited to read the next book.
When I first started this series, I was only mildly into it. Sleuth Maisie Dobbs was a little too sweet, gentle, and perfect for me. But I kept reading them, and what has engaged me more and more is the brilliant way that Jacqueline Winspear weaves the history of World War 1 and 11 into these mysteries. These books really are thoroughly researched, and in the seven mysteries she has written so far, she has covered just about every facet of life during wartime. And not just the factual history--her strength is in her emotional understanding of how people thought and felt about those events. I find that I've come to really enjoy her sleuth as well and appreciate the way that Winspear is able to develop Maisie's character and personal life more and more while still fitting in an interesting plot in each mystery.
Meh, not as compelling as the last few in the series...
Winspear’s 8th outing with her continuing sleuth Maisie Dobbs, who’s a spunky young PI in England between WWI and WWII. This time, Maisie is undercover in a college when the principal is murdered. Dobbs then reveals her true identity as a detective and begins to solve the crime.
The eighth entry into the Maisie Dobbs series gives us a deeper look into the personal life of our protagonist, which I very much enjoyed. The book also deals with how the effects of WWI slowly become the causes of WWII. As we begin to see the rise of Hitler and the Nazis on the horizon, the tension begins to build for the reader, who knows how this portion of the story, at least, will go. The relationship between James and Maisie is a wonderful sub-plot. I will look forward to the next novel with great anticipation.
