I like going into a book blind and I didn't know this was a memoir until I realised the protagonists name was Alice. It was really well written and I enjoyed (that feels like an inappropriate word...) it more than The Lovely Bones. Obviously her experience gave her some inspiration for the story. She was very brave and bold exposing the flaws of her family and of herself (I'm surprised her family still talk to her!).
I liked this book more than I expected it to, given the fact that I didn't really enjoy The Lovely Bones. It moved along at a good pace and was generally engaging.
medium-paced
The beginning was a brutally honest depiction of sexual violence followed by an account of the rough road to recovery. Not a fun read at times but certainly interesting.
Really interesting reading this and The Lovely Bones back to back. They're structured in much the same way even though the narratives take a wildly different take and The Lovely Bones ultimately has a more "closed" ending.
This gets put in memoir > historical fiction given that the man convicted of the crime was falsely accused. The author has come out to apologize, but a man lost 40 years of his life if you include the fact that he needed to be on a registry. The attack may be real, but it is clear that there are aspects of the re-telling in this book that are not.
When I first read this book, I was a teen and was drawn to the story, but knowing the ripple effect has created a different impact. I know prints of this book were stopped, but I hope any newer prints come with a disclaimer. Or, she writes something like "Not so Lucky" where it blends the two stories: convicted of a crime and the victim sells a bestselling book that will eventually garner enough attention for a movie, which leads to questions and the falsely accused to be released.

A horrifying, gripping, engaging, realistic, wonderfully written memoir.
This memoir starts off with a very graphic description of being brutally assaulted and raped that will be very triggering for a lot of readers. It is a very detailed, well-written account of how a traumatic event affected the author's life for years to come.
