An interesting premise (kinda) told in a painfully uninteresting way. Not a huge fan of the ambiguous ending, even if that is somewhat to be expected from this. Large portions of the book are profoundly incomprehensible, and I think this is intentional. I don't plan to reread it. If you enjoy the experience of being out of the loop this may be for you.

this book should have been 300 pages and 6 plot twists shorter. beautiful prose though.

Weird and wild and lost me on the ending. It was a page turner and had great ideas but the overt racism turned me way off. It was a major plot point so it wasn’t something I could gloss over.

This is one of my favorite books ever. I almost always figure out the ending of books and movies ridiculously early and then scorn them as predictable. But I could never have foreseen how this would turn out. I recall pausing about 200 pages from the ending and lamenting to a friend, "I want it to end here!" Not because it was too long (although it is very long) but because it would have been such a nice ending and those 200 extra pages promised all would not stay well. It also gave me paranoid nightmares. How can you not love a book that involves you so much you dream you're being controlled by a mocking old man? Or maybe that's just me, but it's powerful stuff. Read it noooow.
