"She'd gone from being a perfectly ordinary girl in a perfectly ordinary world to becoming a target for water-soluble weirdos and a partner for a skeleton detective out to solve her uncles murder."

  • Discovery: Browsing
  • Reading Format: Audiobook
  • Read Time: 4 Hours

Stephanie Edgely is an introverted twelve-year-old. At her favourite uncles funeral she is left his old creepy house. Her first night there alone a strange man tries to break in and Stephanie is saved by Skulduggery Pleasant. A friend of her grandfathers Mr Pleasant is a detective and walking, talking, fire-throwing skeleton. These two team up together to stand in the way of an all-consuming ancient evil.

Stephanie had the personally of a wet towel draped over a radiator. She has a couple of good one liners but is many there to ask questions on behalf of the reader. Skulduggery Pleasant felt like an irresponsible fun uncle but he never let Stephanie come to any serious harm. No fault of the author but the voice acting was gross to listen to. Rupert sounds like a teenage boy trying to pitch his voice down combined with a subpar Sean Connery impression.

This book was fun but I didn't fall in love with it. I didn't hate the book, but I didn't particularly like it. I didn't become attached to Stephanie, but I really liked Skulduggery.

I thought I might not love this as much as I used to but I need not have worried. I loved it just as much as I did the first couple times.

I am 99% sure I would have liked this better in paper than I did as an audio. I had a really hard time following it. Which is too bad, because it was funny and exciting, and a cool premise. But Honestly, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what on earth was going on. So the sequel will be traditional book form for me.

Please just read this book. The absolute criminal nature of the wit is so flawless it'll combust at any moment, so you'd better take your chance before every copy spontaneously explodes into swanky dust.
