I love Skulduggery. I love the banter he has with Stephanie. I love that she’s an old soul so she seems older and wiser than her 12 year. The magic, the elements, the action. All great fun. Definitely a series I’ll be continuing. Great for bedtime stories to help you fall asleep.

Skulduggery Pleasant has been a book that I've had my sight on for quite a long while. I finally read it and I'm pleasantly surprised (pun not really intended). I can see why Derek Landy has managed to turn this into such a long series. But it's not without its problems, most of which are begotten by its good sides. I like the dialogue, the action, and the fast pacing but near the end of this relatively short book those three plusses start turning into minuses, the snarky comments just don't fit the atmosphere and some of the paragraphs from the fight scenes are either too detailed or not detailed enough (I won't mention how much the letter S is repeated when Skulduggery, Serpine, and Stephanie struggle over a Scepter). The pacing was good but the story arc covered too much (I am complaining that this book wasn't slow enough, yes) and the feeling that there would be some consequences in the end when two of the main-ish characters were supposedly killed was slightly ruined when they turned out okay. All in all, Skulduggery Pleasant is a promising series, I dig the focus on the fighting and I really do hope that Derek Landy has developed that side of his stories in the further novels.
This book was perfect - hilarious, quick-paced, full of snappy-writing. I can't wait to read the sequel. Read my full review here: http://everydayreading.blogspot.com/2008/12/skulduggery-pleasant-by-derek-landy.html
Definitely the best of the series! I've loved reading and rereading this book since middle school. The world building is engaging and Skulduggery Pleasant is a hilariously sarcastic and suave mentor that brings to mind a classy Geralt of Rivia.
I found this book to be an absolute delight. It was quirky, heartfelt, spooky, fast paced and funny at times. I listened to it- and the narrator was fantastic and there was added music and sounds between chapters.
