5 stars. Reread.
I don't have much to say. I love it. Still my favourite. Still can't get enough of it. Will continue, of course.

So I listened to the audiobook narrated by Rupert Degas, who sounds like Chris O'Dowd from the TV show "The IT Crowd" to give you a "for instance" it's just the sort of accent and voice that makes everything sound hilarious. I laughed out loud, I got into it the most I've ever gotten into any audiobook.

The story is about a man who didn't exactly die, so much as inhabit his own skeleton after his death. He is a magician of the elements, and has taken up being a detective. When his friend dies suspiciously, he meets his friends niece Stephanie, and one night when he saves her from a strange attacker looking for "the key" they band together. And find out that for Stephanie this entry into the world of magic and the paranormal, makes everything in her young life click all into place.

The friendship between a young girl and her older mentor skeleton, has a delightfully teasing, and sweet tenor. Skulduggery is older and a bit more cynical, and Stephanie, like most almost teenagers is outspoken and sarcastic, and they bicker and argue like family.

I enjoyed this read. It was VERY similar to Dresden Files but I was OK with that.

The characters were all very sweet and it was pretty cool to see actual psychopathic traits in the bad guy. I really liked the main character Stephanie, she was very relatable even when dealing with skeletons and evil mages

Ok the fatphobia is period typical but bonkers… Crazy on the reread. Another thing that makes rereading books from when you were a kid crazy? The goddamn ages of the main characters. Stephanie is twelve. TWELVE. Excuse.

Anyway still slaps even if some of the ethics/irresponsibility of our titular skeleton become kinda sus when you’ve gained consciousness lol.
