I was enjoying this horror wise - until I realised a coming main theme in the story was an ick for me. Which caused me to dnf after checking if this was going to be  prominent throughout.

the husband not believing her, her friends not believing her, her husband being on the side of some stranger and not hers. Just the gaslighting vibes, that I did not enjoy listening to.

while there are many parts of this book that i didnt like, that was kinda the point. this was gross, absurd, and just downright disturbing. i could not put this down and have not been able to stop thinking about this despite reading it like a week ago.

Please check the content warnings in this book/triggers.

One thing I really did not like was that the author would always mention breasts whenever someone was naked. Like. I know the character is naked. you do not need to also include the line “her pert, adolescent breasts” BUT maybe the point is to be creepy!?? idk considering the POV is the mother of the teen.

Anyway, i thought the author did a great job describing some of the horror and gore aspects especially the parts with insects or rodents. It was so visceral at times that I was like (Gag).

I think the book slowed down quite a bit toward the end/last 60% or so and then picked back up a little bit for the final confrontation.

I RARELY read horror/mystery so I wanted to try and see how this book was since the pretense really pulled me in. I liked how the author didn’t glamorize or make the vampire sexy like the vampire is a total creep (but is still charismatic and such, but he’s written to be unlikeable to the reader)

Anyway, solid 3 stars.

This book is INTENSE. Kinda hit all of the trigger warnings on the way down. I was surprised how much I liked the author's characterization of the women, though.
But damn, I was so ready for Patricia's husband to bite the dust. He was on my last nerve.
