It was indeed miserable. Sunny never failed to entertain me every passing book.

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny fall upon more miserable times when they are sent to stay with their new caretaker, Mr. Sir, at the Lucky Smells Lumbermill, more aptly known as The Miserable Mill. The mill in itself is very unpleasant, but predictably Count Olaf and his henchmen find the Baudelaire children. Unfortunate events are indeed following the Baudelaire's.

Cartoonish but fun. I see why I didn’t like it all those years ago— child labor, exploitation of workers have never sat well with me.

Also I want to point out that there’s some potential normalized LBGTQ representation with Sir and “his partner Charles.” I understand the need for books where the relationships are a focus but I also appreciate books where they’re represented with the same “of course it’s like this” as straight relationships. I can’t remember the word for that.

This series just keep getting better and better. I have no idea what kind of drug has Lemony Snickett put in these books, but they are sure working for me.

something jumps out at me every time i once again undertake the (brilliant, ingenious) task of rereading a series of unfortunate events: these books, which are for children, are so delightful to read as an adult. there is a richness of humor and metatext that feels like it is there for you as an adult. the power of lemony snicket as a narrator-character really cannot be overstated. also, i am blown away by the way in which these books honor the intelligence of children !! AND they are just really great reads, full of intrigue and suspense within a sublimely developed universe! could gush about them forever, and this one isn't even my favorite of the series
