I was very into this story, and I love an unreliable narrator. I thought it gave a pretty realistic picture of what trauma can look like (paranoia, withdrawal, slow recovery, the feeling that everyone wants to go back to "normal" but you are a different person now). For young adults (or anyone!) who went through a trauma or had someone they love go through one, this could really help decipher what could seem like weird and even frustrating behavior. Oh my gosh, the amount that I just wanted to SCREAM at the mother that she needs to just let her daughter heal for FIVE MINUTES. But I think that was also realistic! Excited to read this author again.

Gotta love another recovery from traumatic event novel where no one understands the protagonist except that one special person and you kinda can Never tell what's going on because it's written in first person so it's like all over the place obviously bc she's going through a crisis which is what the author intended but I still don't like it. Guys please start writing your trauma recovery books in third person I can't read another first person abstractly described panic attack

I really enjoyed this book. Though, at first, I found the prose too waxing and poetic with an excess of adjectives and specificity of description, once it was explained that the narrator was a poet it made a lot more sense. I saw the twist coming a mile away, but I felt like that didn’t matter because the emotional weight and journey of the protagonist were what carried the story, not simply the plot of her abduction. Because of this, I especially liked that her story did not end wen she was found. We were given further glimpses into the struggles in the aftermath. Overall a powerful story with a well developed protagonist.
