Gosh it’s scary reading this in today’s context. The foreword and afterword were very helpful for outlining the story since the actual book is comprised completely of letters back and forth. Very clever. Brilliantly written. TBH I just wanted a bit more character development that may have only been possible outside of the context of letters.

This was a fascinating book on a topic that interests me no end- the state of the common German people between the wars and the impact of Nazism on the day to day lives. This was a magnificent book towards understanding that but it was just oh-so-short. How I would have loved to see this elaborated into a full time novel stretching over a longer period of time. But the book does convey how the best of people changed, how they were convinced of something so completely that they followed the new reality blindly. The really scary thing is, we see it happening in many parts of the world even today. Just shows that humans never change, we just cant learn from history!
