4.3 AVERAGE

So, so good. This is a perfectly realised novella, direct, simple, with no waste; it was published in 1938 and deals with events in Germany in the early thirties. We see how totalitarianism captures the minds of its citizens and at the end, an absolutely brilliant revenge scheme.

Brilliant 80 page epistolary history lesson!

Address Unknown was first published in the United States, in Story magazine in September 1938, it caused an immediate sensation. Written as a series of letters between a Jewish American living in San Francisco and his former business partner, returned to Germany, the story, early on, exposed the poison of Nazism to the American public.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Product Description:
A rediscovered classic and international bestseller that recounts the gripping tale of a friendship destroyed at the hands of Nazi Germany

In this searing novel, Kathrine Kressmann Taylor brings vividly to life the insidious spread of Nazism through a series of letters between Max, a Jewish art dealer in San Francisco, and Martin, his friend and former business partner who has returned to Germany in 1932, just as Hitler is coming to power.

Originally published in Story magazine in 1938, Address Unknown became an international sensation. Credited with exposing the dangers of Nazism to American readers early on, it is also a scathing indictment of fascist movements around the world and a harrowing exposé of the power of the pen as a weapon.

A powerful and eloquent tale about the consequences of a friendship—and society—poisoned by extremism, Address Unknown remains hauntingly and painfully relevant today.

I want every single person to read this book.
Except maybe my fiancé because I already regurgitated most of the book to him after I finished because I needed to talk to someone about it immediately.

I don't even want to say much about this for fear that I would spoil it. It's short - my version was 79 pages including the Afterword - so there is no excuse to not give it a whirl. The subject matter is important. There is always that "but how did it happen?" when speaking of Nazi Germany and the Hitler following. There is disbelief that it could or would ever happen again (oh it's so foolish to think this couldn't happen again after all that we've seen).

This book is going along so pleasantly until BOOM it isn't. And then you travel from comfort to annoyance to rage to

I'm pretty much in love with this book. And with Katherine Kressmann Taylor who no longer needs to hide behind an ambiguous name lest readers discover that a *gasp* woman wrote this.

5 Stars

Difficult to read at times, but should be required reading for all. Short but very powerful story. The epistole format was brilliant and very effective. The insight of this work is amazing when you consider it was written in 1938.
