beautiful story about growing up, growing apart, and keeping your childlike wonder alive told through the story of a 12 year old girl and her ghost best friend.
The sweetest middle grade graphic novel. Exactly what I needed to relax this evening and held a good lesson for everyone. A reminder to keep the magic alive always, no matter your age.
Loved this one so much. Amazing illustrations and such a cute story. Really well put together how people struggle with mental health sometimes
Overview:
Lora doesn't want to grow up. Or she is scared too. As she grows up, her friends grow up too. And become more involved with other things besides playing outside and using their imagination.
One day Lora has a magical tea party by herself and meets Alexa. A ghost that lives in her house. But as things go on in life things change and so do Alexa and Lora.
Thoughts:
This book made me cry!!! I connected with it so much. As we get older we become more mature. That isn't a bad thing but we become so mature that we forget the side where our imagination runs wild. I remember being in the school yard with my friend in elementary and we could create stories from our imagination and could make inanimate objects have full on backstories. And I have lost a lot of that part of me. And I think a lot of other people have too.
I know people who have changed because they wanted to fit into the crowd at school. And I think this book hit it out of the park. I usually don't cry at books and this is the second book that has ever made me cry.

This book, had I been reading it at home and not in public, would've had me in tears. It is so so bittersweet. A great story about the scariness of growing up and of being left behind. I felt so much for the Alexa having died at an early age and stuck forever a child while everyone living gets to grow up and sympathized with Lora's feelings of being left behind while everyone else around her grows up and starts to like things that seem scary and foreign to her. I can see why the two were drawn to each and other and helped each other learn some valuable lessons. The ending will have you in tears.
A sweet and poignant graphic novel that takes a look at growing up and growing older. The diverse cast of characters is delightful. I enjoyed the supernatural twist and the bittersweet aspects that it captured.
This was such a cute and beautiful book about growing up and living with grief. I only wish it was longer!

Absolutely loved this graphic novel. The illustration is probably one of my favorite types of illustrations. But I also love the diverse characters and the theme around growing up and not being scared to grow up, finding your own journey, and learning to let go.

The art was beautiful but I feel the title is misleading - the seance tea party happens at the beginning and is not a prominent part of the plot. I also felt like the actual plot (imaginary friend helps the kid grow up) is one that has been done a lot before, albeit twisted in this case to have a ghost be the imaginary friend. It’s a wholesome story but unfortunately I don’t think it will stick with me.
