a beautiful and brutal first person perspective of the savage treatment of Jews in Poland during WW2.
The story sees dual protagonists in Alina and her granddaughter one telling their tale and the other discovering it in the wake of her grandmother's imminent death.
The addition of an son with autism whilst I felt unnecessary, gave an interesting insight into struggles faced now versus those faced during WW2 and gave a subplot of the struggles of a modern mothers, especially those with children with additional needs.
Overall a very enjoyable read and I was kept hooked to find out what happened to Alina and her Tomasz

Gripping from the start, this novel follows the human story of a teenaged woman and her family in nazi controlled Poland in the early 1940's and the same family in America when the woman is 95.
It is a stark reminder of what people went through, which to a British woman in the 21st century. is unimaginable.

OH. MY. GOD. I hold a 5-star rating as an almost unreachable standard and I can honestly say this story was Top Five material. The joy, love, loss, grief, and did I mention love? Oh my the love...it literally transcends generations and my little, dark, twisted COVID heart is so full. This novel will stay with me for a long ass time and I am here for it.
