Each Hunger Games book seems to surpass the one before it, even over a decade later. These prequels hold absolutely nothing back, with absolutely horrifying deaths and gut wrenching ends to storylines - literally no one is safe and that’s evident in Haymitch’s story probably more than anyone else’s that we’ve seen so far. As always, absolutely incredible and dystopian fiction done only the way Collins can.

Not my favorite Hunger Games book, but definitely worth the read. This book focuses more on the themes of media shaping the narrative and just how cruel the regime can be, making you suffer personally without end. This book felt a little repetitive in what it showed and the easter eggs between Songbirds and Hunger Games were a little on the nose. Haymitch just kept suffering and suffering throughout the games and on his return home, making me wonder about the difference between him and Katniss and how President Snow treated them. Maybe more subtlety in the future? Haymitch was really clever and I loved seeing his character portrayed in that way.

thoughts while reading

p2: the parallel between haymitch and katniss
p4: is hattie’s stall not still around in the trilogy?? she must be old as dust by then
p5: we knew girlie pop was covey!
p7: an everdeen making an appearance already
p8: and lenore dove is a baird? this just keeps getting better
p12: so that’s the reason for the cover! 🐍🐦‍⬛
p16: oh ok, mrs everdeen is clearly asterid
p17: oh of course the reaping happens on july 4th
p22: HUH? respectfully, the heck???
p37: see i knew tam amber was around in Ballad

I'm entirely the Capitol's plaything. They will use me for their entertainment and then kill me, and the truth will have no say in it.

p75: what no
not louella
!! we’ve not even reached the arena yet!
p104: wowww.
plutarch has clearly wanted a mockingjay for a long long time before katniss was on the scene
p107: no 😭 not
beetee’s
kid
p123: snow’s garden? 🪴
p124: egh i can’t remember what snow said to katniss in Mockingjay, but i know he’s poisoned somehow
p127: don’t take it personally haymitch, he’s just salty at the reminder of lucy gray
p131: what
p135: oh of flipping course
she’s back as a freaking mutt
p159: 😅 the irony in
a mutt getting a higher score than him
. they rigged it
p172: EFFIE!!
p191: be still my beating heart, if it isn’t our favourite covey
p196: plutarch is really showing himself to be a man’s man
p219: oh counterfeits are sooo clever
p241: it’s killing me not to look back to Catching Fire and slot the puzzle together prematurely. to be fair i do doubt many are named
p243: i really doubt this plot goes down well
p304: and this is where maysilee dies
p311: it’s not wellie. it’s silka
p312: ooft that girl’s not long for the grave if this carries on
p314: yeah a poster like that really paints them as the kids they are
p320: i mean yeah she might have been a good victor but that requires living long enough to win
p322: oh bloody hell 🪓
p327: so…
he did it
? 💥
p331: i mean you’re not wrong, once you win your life is basically not your own
p335: lovely little cameo from our favourite covey
p346: i’d be frickin pissed if i went through all that just to be portrayed as a selfish jackass. no wonder he doesn’t talk about it
p356: hell no!! not
the empty cistern
coming back to haunt us 💔
p363: SHIT i’m gonna hyperventilate 🩸
p365: what the heck did i just read??? i knew
his family died
but why couldn’t
lenore dove escape like lucy gray and the capital could have just pretended she died
??????? 😭😭😭💔💔💔
p367: it’s really not worth winning these games tbh
p381: he calls her sweetheart cause of louella?? 🥺

this is the worst i’ve ever felt after reading a book. i sobbed the whole way through the ending and all the little details in the epilogue destroyed me in new ways. i can’t rate this highly enough. don’t read it.

This is the 5th(?) book in the Hunger Game series and 0.5 within the world's chronology.

I really admire Suzanne Collins' ability to have built a world that is so substantial that she can revisit it and the characters at different points and still have things to say / have her writing land solidly. I appreciate the weaving of revisiting characters like Effie, Beetee and Mags.

This follows Haymitch Abernathy (future mentor to Katniss) during his own Hunger Games reaping + beyond ~24 years prior to where her stories begin.

Honestly still so heart-breaking even though you know where the ending would bring you.

I read this book in 3 sittings and less than 24 hours. Suzanne Collins strikes again. I cried multiple times. Highly recommend.
I'm just glad for the epilogue, otherwise it would've been too depressing.

Heart wrenching and a kick to the gut. Haven’t cried over a novel in a long time, but this was worth the salt and water.
Potent, relevant, poetic, emotional, and a fresh look at the world we already love and dread all at the same time. I would give it 6/5 if I could.
