It absolutely destroyed me. Haymitch lost everything, the plot twists regarding the other books and how even us as readers had fell for the propaganda the capitol spread about Haymitch’s games. Ampert deserved better, Beetee, Mags, Louella, Leonore, absolutely every single character deserved better (except for Snow, who is the most evil fictional character in a series, EVER). I’m speechless, I don’t know how to move on truthfully. It was absolutely PAINFUL to read and I still couldn’t put it down, you go in knowing everyone is gonna suffer and die but then it happens and it’s far worse than what you could possible have imagined. The author is a tragic genius.

Suzanne has done it again. However bad I thought Haymitch’s story could be, oh how it was so much worse. Haymitch was such a loverboy, just like his boy Peeta. And Katniss was exactly like him, but luckier. Haymitch and his continuous flock, his promises, his family. Oh how he kept them all. Even when he lost them. After all, the snow may fall, but the sun also rises. 

“She’s not an easy person; she’s like me, Peeta always says. But she was smarter than me, or luckier. She’s the one who finally kept the sun from rising.”

Not sure how to feel about this. On one hand I love the characters so much so any chance to revisit them I’ll take. On the other this bordered on cheap fan service, name dropping beloved characters every ten pages for the sake of explaining things I didn’t want explained

all the allusions to LGB, katniss’ parents even the mellarks like enough is enough

I don’t think it really added much to my understanding of the world, other than reaffirming the thoughtless cruelty of the games. Certainly it highlighted the ineptitude of the capitol, balanced against their effective lies and propaganda. I guess I'm just searching for the point.
