This is a Hunger Games prequel. Violence is pervasive and graphic (but not sexual violence), and many of the victims and perpetrators are children. Fascism, governmental oppression and discrimination are ubiquitous, as are bigotry and classism. Despite all that, there’s nothing that makes it in any way inappropriate for a YA reader.

Such an emotional and captivating deep dive on our beloved Haymitch’s story. I am super grateful that I have read the ballad of songbird and snakes prior to this one, I’ve been putting it off for a while especially after watching the movie, but I totally recommend it as the call backs just hit different and it just makes his story that much more heartbreaking.

Arguably wins 'the saddest' out of the hunger games books. Devastating. 
Worth noting that while the book would still be good as a standalone it truly is fantastic for connecting all the books together and thus, making it hurt the most. 
Made me want to reread all of the books over again.
