This book does what it wants to do really well, and it was good, but god I'm sad now. The whole time you know how it will end, because we know where the main character will end up...it makes it so heartbreaking. Also we are the capitol and I wonder how many people reading this accept that.

I went into this pretty skeptical, even though I've been a long-time Hunger Games fan. It's always hard to capture the initial magic of the original series, and I didn't love the first prequel, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, so I went in with low expectations.

My expectations stayed pretty low through the beginning of the book. It took a minute for me to vibe with the writing style and to get a hold on Haymitch's narrative voice. But by the third act things really came together in an incredible and tragic way. Even though we know how Haymitch's story ends, the journey there is intense and Collins is a master at connecting everything through world building. It's been a while since I've cried so much at a book (and I'm honestly not sure I cried as much when I first read the original series).

This reads much more similarly to the original series than Songbirds and Snakes does, which I appreciated. Collins has a lot of really interesting things to say about propaganda and narrative. If you like the original series, it would be pretty hard not to like this book.

I am devastated. Gutted. I hurt even though I knew what would happen. A beautifully brutal picture of how propaganda and media can be twisted and abused to the government’s will. I don’t think it’s an accident she released this now.
