DEFINITE recommend

This is, hopefully, the final prequel and book in The Hunger Games series. I think that it was wrapped up nicely and with a satisfying ending.

Yes, this was written for young adults so the writing is not literature, but it was fast-paced and attention-getting. We finally understand WHY Haymitch Abernathy is who he is (including his innermost thoughts). This book dovetails nicely into the series with good character development and character arc.

This is Haymitch's Hunger Games, the 50th Hunger Games, and the 2nd Quarter Quell. Oh, and the reaping in on Haymitch's birthday. Yep, it is a huge set-up for a wild ride, so make sure you are seatbelted!

The narration is fantastic. I highly recommend the audiobook which I checked out from the library.

This addition to The Hunger Games universe was an intense and amazing insight into the power of propaganda and how it is used to the point of realizing the reader has even fallen for it if they're a fan of the rest of the series. This book changes the way I understand the entire series and makes me want to reread the original trilogy with this new context.

From the beginning- I didn't realize how powerful this book would be as we think we know the basics of how Haymitch's games went down, however it makes the most sense that rebellion had been brewing for years by Katniss' games. Now after reading it- of course other tributes did rebellious acts but the capital carefully covered them up. I really enjoyed having the background knowledge and development of various characters seen in the original trilogy-especially Effie and Betee.

I am also traumatized by this one feeling even more graphic than the previous books.

I was surprised how much I actually was suprised by this book, I wasn’t sure if it was going to bring anything new or not, but it did! I was also suprised how different it was the original first book. Suzanne Collins tried too hard to connect this story back to Katnisses one. Too many connections, too many people we already knew and were meeting for the first time, it was cute at first but then it felt as though it became forced? I’m unsure. I LOVED IT THO!! It’s a dream and a joy to be taken back into a universe you had once left. Amazing.

Again fell righg into the cadence of Susan's writing style which creates such identifiable voices for each of her characters! Heart wrenching in its tales of great love and ultimately great loss.

Buddy read with @nomad_1291 ❤

Ok, wow. Although I was very excited to be able to read this, as I received it from the library only a day after release, this blew my expectations away. The plot was intense, and very creative. It has some darker themes and is a bit scarier than the original trilogy, and kept me on the edge of my seat. A few recurring characters and old plot devices, but I thought that they were seamed in well. Painful character development that is really well written, with a satisfying ending that leads to the trilogy perfectly. I think it could have been written more appropriately for the younger audience it is marketed to, even if Haymitch is narrating. Could use a round of edits for wordy sentences as well. But overall, such an achy, soulful, tragic, prequel for a fantastic character.
