Final Reaction: Suzanne Collins has a twisted mind. I mean that as a compliment of course. For too long, I lumped The Hunger Games in with other YA dystopian fiction. I read the original trilogy shortly after it came out but haven’t revisited the world since, and I forgot what a great writer Collins is. The world building is top notch, the writing is propulsive but not chaotic, and the characters are mostly complicated people. Since this is a prequel, there aren’t a ton of surprises, but she still manages to tug at the heartstrings. No wonder Haymitch is so messed up!
It’s probably best to read the original trilogy first, but even though it’s been almost 15 years since I read them, I had no trouble following the story.

One of the better ones in this series, but brutally sad. I guess they are all sad.
As much as I adore Haymitch, there just wasn't enough of his backstory. I know that sounds redundant because the whole book is about his games, but it just wasn't enough for me. There was 200 pages about the week before the games, and maybe 50 pages of the weeks after his games when we get insight into the person he turned into by Katniss and Peeta's story.
I didn't feel any real fear for him during the Games like I did with Lucy and Katniss, and I feel with double the amount of tributes there should have been much more fighting and struggling to survive. We know how hard Peeta and Katniss fought to survive with a normal arena. It almost felt like his Games were easier.
