I hadn't read a graphic novel in a long time and Elektra always feels like coming home to me.
Look, if you want some sort of pacey, plot driven thriller this is not it. It is in some ways - there are elements of a plot here but it is not what it sat down to do for you.
This is high-concept and sometimes, the dream sequences feel like pages of wandering but it comes down to giving you a great character and building a great character through her imagery and her broken, broken mind. And that is what it delivers.
The art in this is stunning and to be honest, the plot is pretty great too. But mostly, the art and the concept is 5 stars.

Points for the visually spectacular art.
Points off for the weak writing and the disgustingly racist caricature of an Indigenous Australian man.
It absolutely blows my mind that in 2014, a writer thought that it was okay to create an Aboriginal villain who is an animalistic, spear-wielding, skin-wearing cannibal guided by a mystical serpent. It's offensive on so many levels. It harkens back to the lurid stories (of savagery, of animalistic peoples, of cannibalism) that were literally used to justify generations of violence, dispossession, child abduction and genocide against Australia's first peoples by European invaders. It echoes racial slurs and stereotypes that are still used to attack and oppress Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today. And it's deeply disrespectful in its appropriation of Indigenous cultures and beliefs.
(On the bright side, Blackman's overuse and occasional misuse of 'Australianisms' is kind of amusing. About halfway through I started imagining all of Bloody Lips' dialogue in Steve Irwin's voice, which made the all-around horribleness of the character the tiniest bit more bearable.)
To be clear, I don't believe that Haden Blackman and Mike Del Mundo had racist or malicious intentions. I do think they have created a deeply racist caricature of a villain in Bloody Lips, and that their storytelling displays a real tone-deafness and lack of awareness (which, thinking about it now, is also evident in Blackman's Batwoman work).
But regardless of what Blackman and Del Mundo were going for, their portrayal of Bloody Lips is deeply offensive and revolting, and I would not recommend this book to anybody.

War ganz okay aber irgendwie hat mir was gefehlt. Einerseits war es so schnell vorbei, andererseits war es mehr als langweilig. Hmmm.

I bought this trade on sale because I liked the art, and I'm easily satisfied with that purchase. Mundo's art in this comic is something to behold as the careful brushstrokes and deep colours make this reminiscent of the Japanese art Elektra is (stereotypically?) based off. The colours are breathtaking, and the contrast of the light blues and whites against the harsh reds, whilst not overly original, are very well done, and something I personally enjoy a lot.
As I said, I bought this trade for a the art, and thus didn't expect much from the story. The story itself is fairly boring, and seems to be the usual comic plot of "There's someone who is an x (in this case an assassin), I am a better x". So nothing mind blowing but entertaining nonetheless. I would say I'm sick of "edgy" comics stories about assassins reconciling with their past and whatnot but I did buy an Elektra comic, so that's my fault!
Overall this is a nice little book, with amazing art rivalling that of Phil Noto and an average story that was still enjoyable.

I loved seeing Elektra get her own solo series. I loved the artwork and the storyline, even if I wanted more from it. This is clearly for fans of Elektra’s character and I will always read stories about this characters.

Lots and lots of killing. The writing and art are both pretty good, the violence mostly coherent. But I mostly don't care. Not about Elektra, not about any of the side characters. Some of the settings are interesting. And there are hints that there is a book I would have liked in here somewhere. Not bad for what it is, just not what I prefer to read.
